Well we're not even close to having the kitchen finished, so I like to busy myself with the other rooms that I can get 'completed'. Basically that leaves me two rooms, this living room and the upstairs bedroom, and since that's sure to be boring, I give you the living room:
The ongoing debate is whether or not to paint the fireplace. We're talking an eight food wide fireplace, so it's really the attention-getter of the room. Now do we tone it back by painting it white, or keep it original brick? Apparently there's some acid wash treatment (that sounds safe) that will bring the faded brick back to life. As you can see the walls will be khaki and the trim is being redone in white. SO, what say you? (Sorry about the crappy photoshop job, it's early, forgive me...)

The white fireplace would look nice in white, just soften the white by using something other than bright white... and use a lighter khaki, the softer will be more comforting to the eye... Just my opinion... as Mama would say, "take it or leave it"... I miss Mama...
i personally like the brick, if it were cleaned up a bit. it seems like on a lot of the home improvement shows i watch, people spend a lot of time taking off paint that a previous owner put on brick, and it always looks better when it's the plain brick.
plain briok. or else have it redone/overlaid by a contractor in pieces of light colored stone that are about 12x12 inches. I've seen that give a nice facelift and it's a more sophisticated feel than plain brick. depends on the look you are going for, tho, and your budget. plain brick can be very charming.
I like the brick. Btw, maybe I can swing by sometime next week to see the house?
I tend to paint everything, and am not overly fond of plain brick. I think it would look great painted. Of course, I'm sure you could make either one look great with your decorating skills!
I would not personally paint the brick. It will look more true to the period and can still be neutral as it is. NOW- that said - your taste is a lot more modern than mine, so if you do decide to paint it, I would use a softer color than white. The texture will be a focal point, so keep it closer to the wall color- maybe a glaze of your taupe over the brick?
Sara - of course you can come over to see the place! it's an open invitation for all...and i'm in the painting stage so if anyone has mad painting skills or just likes to pretend stop on by :)
